As much as I'd like to witness the first woman* elected governor of Alaska, there is no way in hell I'm voting for Palin.
Oh, anybody would expect a lefty like me to lean Democratic, but frankly**, I can't believe Palin's response to the question about abortion during the debate the other night. Or rather, her non-response.
When asked if she would sign into law legislation that would further restrict access to abortion, she said yes. As for exceptions when abortion would be legal, she said that an exception would be when the pregnancy threatened the life of the mother. When asked if an exception would be made for women who are victims of rape she would only reply, "I'd choose life."
Which is such a horrifying non-answer, I can't even wrap my brain around it. I only wish that a followup question would have asked about an exception being made for victims of incest.
Look, having perused the Palin website, it's pretty clear that she is one of the extreme rightwingers that the Mat-Su Valley tends to send to the Lege. Her approach to the subsistence issue is to duck and toss out the term 'personal use.' But more on that later. I'm moved into my palatially-sized new cabin now and will be able to rant as frequently as I'd like.
*Why couldn't it be Fran Ulmer? Why?
** Oh, heh, I just enjoying using the word "Frank" in celebration of the end of his term.

I'm sort of stumped as to why this is such a big deal. She believes humans have the right to life, including the unborn. So what?
To be consistent, she would have to oppose abortion in all cases except of course the life of the mother. By your analysis, if I was the product of incest my life becomes a lesser value? I don't get it.
This won't hurt her. She looks strong and principled, unlike the opponents who dodge around the issue.
How about a follow-up question for Tony: "Well, if you believe you can kill the unborn, at what stage of development do you think you can kill 'em? After birth, but still with the cord attached? Would love to see the Tony Talking Points on that one!
Okay, I'll bite, though generally, I think that people in this country can't usually have a discussion about abortion without it degenerating into name-calling and hostility. But here goes:
I don't believe the government should be able to force a woman to go through with a pregnancy caused by a rape. The woman should be allowed to decide for herself. Her choice.
My original point does not mean that I'm presuming to decide the worth of anyone's existence.

I guess this wasn't about abortion per se - it as about your claim that a pol being unabashed pro-life is somehow a liability.

And so I assumed. My point was that you are letting your political view interfere with your logic. Palin came out of her pro-life "rant" looking good and not wishy-washy. It's true, many (even most) people don't agree with Palin's firm position on abortion, but most do respect her for standing firm on the record while the biased moderators, Tony, and Halcro try to drag her through the mud. She came out looking good, and those guys looked like bullies. Your dislike for her politics is coloring your analysis. If you doubt this, note the 9 point victory.

Of course you are. You don't think an unborn child life has a worth of that as a born one, or you would be on Sarah's side. Every pro-choicer that would not support infanticide necessarily has this position. Don't squirm; take a lesson from Sarah :-)
