Announcing our First, and Possibly Last, Poll Ever

Now, take a moment and tell me where this picture was taken.

Anchorage? Wasilla? Suburban Insert-Name-of-Major-City-Here?

Nope, nope, and nope. This, my peoples, is a shot taken this morning at Squarebank's own bit of big box store/chain store Hell sprawl out by the Steese Highway. Note the Carl's Jr.1 in the background, which accompanies the Chili's (blag!) and the most recent addition to culinary excellence, yet another McDonald's.

It is also the subject of our first ever poll! What is the best epithet nickname for our shiny new homage to conspicuous consumption? Your choices are at right - and if you have a better one, by which I mean a funnier or nastier one, please share in the comments section.

1Photo taken while driving the Soob in that neck of the (former) woods. Had I more time and the stomach to remain in the area doing laps for better pictures, I would've definitely captured what is to me a new phenomenon: two lane drive-thrus. Seriously, at any given moment of the day, cars are lined up in side by side drive-thrus? When did this become normal?

Wait, I'm intrigued by these "two-lane" drive throughs.... How do they work? Do they have a little tram they send your order out on? A robotic arm that reaches over/around the car closest to the window? A pneumatic tube like at the bank? I'm confused.

I have no idea which language you reference, Author, but how very appropriate.

And Ish, there are two sets of signs with prices and speaker, two lanes running next to each other. As for the delivery system, well, I haven't checked it out personally.

I'll need an excuse, likely to be drunk and a rider in a car on a bad food run, to find out.

The sacrifices one must make for the common good....

If you put the ingredients - Carl's, Jr, Lowe's, Sportsmans' WH, etc -into a can, shook it real hard from way up in the sky, and threw it down ten times, on one of the throws it would be Wasilla.

If I didn't recognize the hills in the background I wouldn't have believed it was in Squarebanks!

Guess it's time for y'all to move to Manley, eh?

Having been born and raised here, I have seen the slow cancerous spread of box stores in Fairbanks: first, Fast Food Row (formerly known as Airport Way); then, the Geist Road McCrapland and the College Road East transformation into College Dropout/Retiree Cashier Hell (aka Bentley Dairy's slow and painful transmogrification into Warehouse Horror Row, featuring such beauties as Sam's Slub and JayBird's WingNut); concurrently, there was the boxification of South Fairbanks (Used Car Salesman Haven right next to Storage Unit City); and last, what you've been referring to as Fanchorage, o Cabindweller. This is just the most recent neighborhood in a long and ghastly horrorshow to go from woods and gardens and charming historical cabins and structures to BIG BOX WAREHOUSE ARCHITECTURAL MADNESS! This is nothing new, alas. The city/borough fathers (and the Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce) have NO sense of what a liveable city is. None whatsoever.

Well, I can't take credit for "Fanchorage." That would be SubArctic Mama.
